Although Darian's life was short, she influenced so many people with her kind and gentle ways. Her spirit lives on and she continues to impact people by spreading kindness through others all over the country. From Arizona to Texas to Michigan to Florida, Darian’s Kindness Warriors carry on her love and kindness by encouraging others to Live Like Darian and just be kind.
Darian was a junior at Brighton High School and a youth hockey player who died tragically in a car accident while riding with her teammate to hockey practice in February, 2018. She was born October 22, 2001 in Howell, Michigan, the daughter of proud parents Troy and Regina, and loving brother, Trever Locklear.
In the months following Darian’s death, we were contacted by several students telling us beautiful stories of her friendship and kindness. They all had a common theme. When they were alone with no friends, Darian was there for them. Almost all of the kids were being bullied to some degree and she coached them through it and helped them see their value. These stories started a little kindness campaign we called KINDNESS IS BEAUTIFUL. That little campaign has now become a full-fledged 501(c)3 non-profit foundation. We are on a quest in pursuit of kindness and inclusion on our schools.
Now, here’s a little more about Darian’s short but impactful life.
Darian enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, hanging out on the lake, and of course, playing hockey. Darian played right wing for the Meijer 16U AAA girls team out of Lansing, Michigan. Hockey was her life and she was such a joy to watch. Having been fortunate to achieve 3 State Championships (KV Ravens 12U, Little Caesars 14U, and Belle Tire 16U) and a National Championship (Belle Tire 16U), Darian was a champion herself, and she was blessed to be part of such wonderful, talented teams.
Darian was a beautiful girl inside and out and she will always be remembered for her kind spirit and caring soul. She was wonderful with children and she loved animals. Her heart was pure and she was always so full of life. Her teammates referred to her as a positive role model who always had a smile on her face and something silly to say. Her classmates tell many stories about how Darian helped them in times of trouble. She will be forever missed but we know that her kind spirit lives on in all of us.
The Darian Locklear Hockey Grant has been created in her memory to help young girls reach their dreams of playing college hockey. Go to the USA Hockey website for more information on how to apply.
The Darian Locklear Kindness Scholarship has been established for Livingston County high school seniors and the first awards were in May of 2019. Please click on the link in the scholarship section for how to apply for this scholarship.
Our newest endeavor will be to help others in need within our community.
